Optical transmission/reception component detection

In order to ensure the quality of optical module products, strict testing and quality inspection procedures such as incoming material inspection, parameter inspection, aging testing, real machine testing, and end face testing are carried out before shipment. All test results must meet the standard level, otherwise the optical module will be returned to the production line for readjustment. But are you familiar with all these tests? In this issue of the article, let's take a look at those optical module tests along with Baijian Testing 1. Material inspection and patch testing will be conducted before assembling the optical module. Material inspection refers to the quality confirmation and verification of raw materials and components, such as TOSA, ROSA, and BOSA, to ensure the quality of the finished optical module. Materials that do not meet the inspection results are rejected. Chip detection is mainly used to detect whether the PCB board chip is correct or contaminated, ensuring the performance of the optical module 2. Optical power detection: Optical module power generally refers to the output power of the optical module, which is the average output optical power of the light source at the sending end of the optical module, also known as output optical power. It is an important parameter that affects the transmission distance of the optical module. When the transmitted light power is too small, the received light power at the receiving end of the module will be less than the receiving sensitivity, and the module will not be able to receive the signal normally; When the emitted light power is too high, the required bias current will also be too high, affecting the transmission quality of the signal and the service life of the module 3. Extinction ratio and optical modulation amplitude test Extinction ratio refers to the ratio of optical power output by the laser at high levels (i.e. all "1" codes) to low levels (i.e. all "0" codes). The higher the extinction ratio, the greater the relative amplitude, and the stronger the ability to receive and distinguish optical signals, resulting in higher reception sensitivity. Testing can detect whether the laser operates within the optimal bias point and modulation efficiency range. Optical Modulation Amplitude is an indicator that measures the power difference between laser on and off

4. Bit Error Rate and Receiving Sensitivity Test Bit Error Rate (BER) refers to the ratio of the number of error code elements received after photoelectric conversion at the receiving end within a specified time to the number of code elements provided by the output end of the error code analyzer. Due to issues such as attenuation and dispersion, errors can easily occur, and with errors, there is an error rate. Receiver Sensitivity refers to the minimum received optical power of an optical module at a certain rate and error rate

5. Communication can only be established when the emission and reception wavelengths of the optical modules used on both ends of the wavelength testing equipment are the same. Using instruments such as spectral analyzers to measure the central wavelength of the optical module usually deviates from the standard value. Different types of optical modules have different deviations. If the tested value is not within the allowable range, the optical module is considered defective 6. High and low temperature aging test: High and low temperature aging test is a simulation of limit conditions to verify the working performance of optical modules. It can compare the differences in parameters such as optical power, extinction ratio, sensitivity, etc. between room temperature and high and low temperature, thereby reducing the scrap rate and ensuring the working stability of optical modules
