Transmittance and haze detection

1. The definition of haze and transmittance refers to the cloud like state caused by light scattering inside or on the surface of a transparent or semi transparent sample, that is, the ratio of scattered transmitted light to total transmitted light, determined by the scattered light flux. Transmittance is the ability of a transparent or semi transparent sample to transmit light, that is, the ratio of transmitted light to incident light, determined by the total transmitted light flux. When light shines on transparent or semi transparent materials, some of the light will be reflected back (reflected light), some will be absorbed (absorbed light), and some will penetrate the material (transmitted light). However, in the transmitted part of the light, some will maintain the original propagation direction, called parallel light, while another part of the light will be scattered internally due to the characteristics of the material. This part of scattered light is referred to as scattered light in the definition of haze. It is not difficult to find through the definition of both that the key point of haze description is light diffusion (or scattered light). The key point of describing transmittance is the total transmitted luminous flux. So haze and transmittance are two different concepts, with completely different definitions, descriptions, and calculation methods. 2. Factors affecting haze and transmittance: When a parallel beam of light is incident on a certain medium (such as transparent plastic), due to the non-uniformity of the material's optical properties, surface defects, uneven internal structure, the presence of bubbles and impurities, etc., the beam will change direction (diffusion and deflection), resulting in some scattered light, which is called scattered light. According to international regulations, the ratio of scattered light flux that deviates from the direction of incident light through the sample to transmitted light flux is expressed as a percentage, which is called haze. Samples with high haze make people feel more blurry, and light can also cause loss when passing through the sample, that is, the transmitted light flux passing through the sample is always smaller than the incident light flux shining on the sample. The ratio of the two is the transmittance. 3. The calculation formula for haze and transmittance requires measuring the incident luminous flux (T1), transmitted luminous flux (T2), instrument scattered luminous flux (T3), and sample scattered luminous flux (T4) in the process of measuring the haze and transmittance of the sample
